Cool air back, on a timeline you can count on

AC repair means finding the one thing that stopped your system and fixing it properly. Most breakdowns come down to a short list: a failed capacitor or contactor, a worn condenser fan motor, a slow refrigerant leak, a frozen evaporator coil or a clogged condensate drain. We test until we know which one it is, so you are not paying for guesses.

We also tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense. If your system is young and the problem is a single part, we fix it. If it is older, leaking badly and the repair would cost a large share of a new unit, we explain that plainly and you decide. Our AC Installation page covers that path if you ever need it.

HVAC Garfield is licensed and bonded in Washington. We also hold $1M general liability insurance, which protects your home while our technician works indoors and out at the condenser.

What you get with an AC repair visit

Testing the whole system
We look at the thermostat, indoor unit, outdoor condenser and the wiring that links them, and we take refrigerant pressure and electrical readings rather than guessing. The diagnostic fee is credited toward your repair.
Replacing worn electrical parts
Heat and constant on-off cycling wear out capacitors, contactors and relays. We keep the common ones on the truck, so many of these repairs get done on the first visit.
Finding refrigerant leaks
If the refrigerant is low, it's leaking somewhere. We track down the leak before adding any, since topping off alone only means another visit later.
Cleaning coils and drains
A dirty coil or plugged drain line can ice up the system or put water on your floor. We clear the drain and clean whatever is causing trouble.
Fixing fans and motors
When the outdoor fan hums without turning or the indoor blower moves little air, we test the motor and replace it if it's dead.
A year of labor coverage
Every repair includes a 1-year labor warranty. If something we fixed stops working right within that year, tell us and we'll come back to make it right.

When your air conditioner is asking for help

  • Rooms stay warm while it runs

The thermostat says cooling and the fan is moving air, yet the rooms never get comfortable. A dead capacitor, a stalled outdoor fan or a low refrigerant charge is usually behind it.

  • Ice on the copper lines

Frost on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil means airflow or refrigerant is off. Turn the cooling off and let it thaw before you call.

  • Water around the indoor unit

A clogged condensate drain can overflow into a closet or basement. Catching it early saves you from damaged flooring.

  • Short, frequent cycling

A unit that runs in quick bursts and shuts off again usually has a control fault, an incorrect refrigerant charge or the wrong capacity for the house. That stop-and-start pattern also wears parts down sooner.

  • New noises or smells

Grinding, squealing, buzzing or a burning smell are worth a call right away. Shut the system off at the thermostat if you smell anything electrical.

How your repair day goes

  1. 1

You call, we set a window

Tell us what the AC is doing and we give you an honest arrival window. If a breakdown happens at night or on a weekend, we answer, with no emergency or after-hours fees.

  2. 2

    We keep you posted

Our technician calls before heading your way. If an earlier job runs long, you hear about it from us, along with a new time, instead of waiting by the door.

  3. 3

    Diagnosis and a written quote

We track down the cause and walk you through it, pointing to the worn part or the reading that gave it away. Then you get the price on paper before any work begins. No part gets swapped until you approve it.

  4. 4

    Test, then tidy up

Once the fix is in, we let the system cool through a complete cycle and measure the air coming out of your vents. We clear away old parts and packaging, then explain what we replaced and why.

What goes into an AC repair price

Your total depends on which part broke and how hard it is to get to. You see the price in writing before any work begins, and the diagnostic fee comes off the repair. These are the things that usually change the number.

Which component broke
Swapping a capacitor or contactor is fast and inexpensive. A fan motor or compressor part takes more in both parts and labor.
Kind of refrigerant and how much
Plenty of older units use R-22, which is no longer made, so it's hard to find and costly per pound. Finding and sealing a leak adds labor as well.
How easy the unit is to reach
An air handler wedged into an attic or shallow crawlspace takes slower, careful work. Equipment in an open basement or garage is faster to get to, which lowers labor time.
How old and worn the system is
On an aging unit, fixing one part can reveal others close to failing. We show you what we see and you decide what to repair now.

Common questions about AC repair

Something not covered here? (509) 210-6959

How fast can a technician reach me?

That depends on the day and the calls already ahead of you, so we give you an honest arrival window on the phone. We pick up for breakdowns at any hour, and if your time moves, we call with a new one.

Is a night or weekend repair more expensive?

It isn't. We don't charge emergency or after-hours fees, so a 10 p.m. repair is priced just like a 10 a.m. one.

Can adding refrigerant solve the problem?

Only for a short time, in some cases. Refrigerant runs in a sealed loop and shouldn't need refilling, so a low level means a leak. We locate it first, then you decide whether to have it sealed instead of paying for a recharge each summer.

Is it better to fix my AC or buy a new one?

When the system is healthy and one part has failed, fixing it is usually the smarter value. When it's old, leaking and needs a major part, a new unit may be worth it. We price both and the call is yours.

Do your repairs come with a warranty?

They do. Each repair carries a 1-year labor warranty. If something we fixed acts up within that year, let us know and we'll schedule a return visit to handle it.

Will you come out to towns near Garfield?

We will. Besides Garfield, we repair air conditioners in Colfax, Pullman, Moscow, Cheney and Clarkston, and your arrival window accounts for the drive.
